Jonah 4 (YLT) Young's Literal Translation

1 And it is grievous unto Jonah -- a great evil -- and he is displeased at it;
2 and he prayeth unto Jehovah, and he saith, `I pray Thee, O Jehovah, is not this my word while I was in mine own land -- therefore I was beforehand to flee to Tarshish -- that I have known that Thou art a God, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness, and repenting of evil?
3 And now, O Jehovah, take, I pray Thee, my soul from me, for better is my death than my life.`
4 And Jehovah saith, `Is doing good displeasing to thee?`
5 And Jonah goeth forth from the city, and sitteth on the east of the city, and maketh to himself there a booth, and sitteth under it in the shade, till that he seeth what is in the city.
6 And Jehovah God appointeth a gourd, and causeth it to come up over Jonah, to be a shade over his head, to give deliverance to him from his affliction, and Jonah rejoiceth because of the gourd with great joy.
7 And God appointeth a worm at the going up of the dawn on the morrow, and it smiteth the gourd, and it drieth up.
8 And it cometh to pass, about the rising of the sun, that God appointeth a cutting east wind, and the sun smiteth on the head of Jonah, and he wrappeth himself up, and asketh his soul to die, and saith, `Better is my death than my life.`
9 And God saith unto Jonah: `Is doing good displeasing to thee, because of the gourd?` and he saith, `To do good is displeasing to me -- unto death.`
10 And Jehovah saith, `Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for which thou didst not labour, neither didst thou nourish it, which a son of a night was, and a son of a night perished,
11 and I -- have not I pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than twelve myriads of human beings, who have not known between their right hand and their left -- and much cattle!`
1 But it displeased H7489 W-VQY3MS Jonah H3124 EMS exceedingly H7451 AFS , and he was very angry H2734 W-VQY3MS .
2 And he prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , I pray thee H577 IJEC , O LORD H3068 EDS , was not H3808 D-NPAR this H2088 DPRO my saying H1697 CMS-1MS , when I was H1961 VQFC-1MS yet H5704 PREP in H5921 PREP my country H127 CFS-1MS ? Therefore H5921 PREP I fled H1272 L-VQFC before H6923 VPQ1MS unto Tarshish H8659 LFS-3FS : for H3588 CONJ I knew H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art a gracious H2587 AMS God H410 NMS , and merciful H7349 W-AMS , slow H750 JMS to anger H639 NMD , and of great H7227 W-JMS kindness H2617 NMS , and repentest H5162 W-VNPMS thee of H5921 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS .
3 Therefore now H6258 W-ADV , O LORD H3068 EDS , take H3947 VQI2MS , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , my life H5315 CFS-1MS from H4480 M-PREP-1MS me ; for H3588 CONJ it is better H2896 AMS for me to die H4194 VQQ3MS than to live H2416 M-NMS-1MS .
4 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Doest thou well H3190 I-VHI2MS to be angry H2734 VQQ3MS ?
5 So Jonah H3124 EMS went out H3318 W-VQY3MS of H4480 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS , and sat H3427 W-VQY3MS on the east side H6924 M-NMS of the city H5892 L-NMS , and there H8033 ADV made H6213 W-VQY3MS him a booth H5521 NFS , and sat H3427 W-VQY3MS under H8478 CMP-3FS it in the shadow H6738 B-NMS , till H5704 PREP he might see H7200 VQY3MS what H4100 IPRO would become H1961 VQY3MS of the city H5892 B-NMS .
6 And the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS God H430 EDP prepared H4487 W-VPY3MS a gourd H7021 NMS , and made it to come up H5927 W-VHY3MS over H5921 M-PREP Jonah H3124 L-EMS , that it might be H1961 L-VQFC a shadow H6738 NMS over H5921 M-PREP his head H7218 CMS-3MS , to deliver H5337 L-VHFC him from his grief H7451 M-CFS-3MS . So Jonah H3124 EMS was H8055 W-VQY3MS exceeding glad H1419 AFS of H5921 M-PREP the gourd H7021 D-NMS .
7 But God H430 D-NAME-4MP prepared H4487 W-VPY3MS a worm H8438 CFS when the morning H7837 D-NMS rose H5927 B-CFP the next day H4283 LD-CFS , and it smote H5221 W-VHY3FS the gourd H7021 D-NMS that it withered H3001 W-VQY3MS .
8 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the sun H8121 D-NMS did arise H2224 K-VQFC , that God H430 EDP prepared H4487 W-VPY3MS a vehement H2759 AFS east H6921 NMP wind H7307 NFS ; and the sun H8121 D-NMS beat H5221 W-VHY3FS upon H5921 PREP the head H7218 NMS of Jonah H3124 EMS , that he fainted H5968 W-VTY3MS , and wished H7592 W-VQY3MS in H854 himself H5315 NMS-3MS to die H4191 L-VQFC , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , It is better H2896 AMS for me to die H4194 than to live H2416 M-NMS-1MS .
9 And God H430 EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Jonah H3124 EMS , Doest thou well H3190 I-VHI2MS to be angry H2734 VQQ3MS for H5921 PREP the gourd H7021 D-NMS ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I do well H3190 VHFA to be angry H2734 VQQ3MS , even unto H5704 PREP death H4194 NMS .
10 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast had pity H2347 VQQ2MS on H5921 PREP the gourd H7021 D-NMS , for the which H834 RPRO thou hast not H3808 NADV labored H5998 VQQ2MS , neither H3808 W-NADV madest it grow H1431 VPQ2MS-3MS ; which came up H1961 VQQ3MS in a night H3915 GMS , and perished H6 VQQ3MS in H1121 S-CMS a night H3915 GMS :
11 And should not H3808 NADV I H589 W-PPRO-1MS spare H2347 VQI1MS Nineveh H5210 LFS , that great H1419 D-AFS city H5892 D-GFS , wherein H834 RPRO are H3426 ADV more H7235 VHFA than sixscore thousand H8147 M-MFS persons H120 NMS that H834 RPRO cannot H3808 ADV discern H3045 VQQ3MS between H996 PREP their right hand H3225 CFS-3MS and their left hand H8040 L-CMS-3MS ; and also much H7227 AFS cattle H929 W-NFS ?
